Ugly Duckling has returned with quite possibly their
finest effort to date, "Moving at Breakneck Speed." This dynamic effort shows once again how very talented the Long Beach
based trio is in terms of thoughtful song construction and top notch production. Continuing with some of the more exploratory and introspective material found on their
2009 release "Audacity," they have somehow managed to recapture the thematic excellence of earlier works like "Taste the Secret" and
"Journey To Anywhere" at the same time. You might say that this album is a summation of all that has proceeded it in the Ugly Duckling catalog.
As one of the lucky few who have been allowed to hear the album, which is slated for release in fall 2011, I can say with confidence
that fans of Ugly Duckling will not be disappointed. The beats and samples are exactly what we've come to expect from the group, funky.
Samples are abundant and, as usual, scratches are skillfully executed. Should you decide to join UD on their latest adventure you can expect to
find an effort worthy of repeat listening.

for the second straight year i participated in the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, SC. after three months of training i crossed
the finish line in a personal best 56:07, taking more than 8 minutes off my time of a year ago and going under an hour for the first time
in a race. while the course was still extremely
crowded (there are, after all, about 40,000 people taking part) it was better this year. they started groups in waves which allowed runners
to spread out a little. all in all it was an awesome day and well worth the effort that i put in through the winter. i can't wait to
do it again next year and try to break 55 minutes. with this race behind me i plan to run a couple 5k races between now and the start of summer. i am on pace to reach my personal workout
goals (500 miles running, 200 miles elliptical, 5,000 pushups) again this year so hopefully next year i can set my sights even higher.
as i continue to train i'm starting to feel like more of a runner so the plan, God willing, is to try and tackle a half marathon in 2012. godspeed!

so i've been letting the Oregon fans i know have it pretty bad since the Ducks failed to bring home the BCS
National Championship in last night's game against Auburn. they definitely deserve it after all the crap they
talked throughout the season but i've decided to give it a rest. they gave it their best shot and they should be proud.
sure their best shot wasn't good enough and sure they made it all that way only to come home empty handed. but
that's no reason to be ashamed. maybe if they would have played a tougher non-conference schedule instead of playing
New Mexico, Portland State, and Tennessee, whose combined records this year were 9 and 27. perhaps then they would
have been better prepared to take on the SEC champs. maybe they should have spent more time worrying about how to
score on teams with quality defenses and less time, like seventh grade girls coordinating their outfits, worrying
about which uniforms to wear. who's to say. whatever the case, be proud my Oregon faithful of what you almost accomplished.
sure you lost on the biggest stage your school has ever been on, but you sure looked cool doing it.

on a loosely related note, i recently discovered an odd fact about the sports teams i like and dislike. nearly every college
or professional sports team that i strongly dislike has either green or red (or pinstripes) as a team color. that's not to
say that i dislike every green or red team, but my least favorite teams all have these colors in common. on the other side,
my favorite sports teams all wear either blue or purple. my favorite pro teams are
the Dodgers and Lakers while my favorite colleges are Washington and UCLA. there are a few other teams, like the Suns, Clippers,
Colts, Cowboys, Vikings, and Chargers, that i like but i wouldn't go so far as to call them my teams.
in college, my least favorite schools are Oregon and USC. i also dislike Ohio State, Nebraska, Washington State, and several others
who all wear red, and Miami in green. There are a few other schools i don't like, such as Notre Dame, that have blue as a color
but they also have green as a secondary color. in addition, their blue is a navy blue and of the few teams i don't like that have
blue it's always a navy blue. BYU, Cal, and Arizona (who also has red) would fit into this category as well. still with me? in the
NBA there is really only one team that i absolutely cannot stand, the Boston Celtics. there was a time i would have mentioned the
Spurs or Pistons in this category but not so much anymore. in the NFL i strongly dislike the Jets, Patriots, 49ers, and Eagles.
finally, in baseball the teams i root against are, of course, the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Braves, Padres, Cardinals, and Angels
(although they're way behind the others.) the Yankees need no explanation but as a Dodger fan you'd think the Giants would be on this
list as well. considering they knocked off the Phillies i'm giving them a temporary reprieve. true the Braves, Padres, and Cardinals
have blue in addition to red but, again, it's dark blue. perhaps a secondary rule to all of this is that i tend to dislike teams that
are in the same conference or division as the teams i like. this may seem obvious but i was amazed by the number of Pac-10 people who
were pulling for Oregon to beat Auburn. i really don't understand the logic of favoring one of your rivals over an out of conference
team that you really don't have anything against. i love the Pac-10 but only because it contains Washington and UCLA. i've actually
grown kind of fond of Oregon State as well but mainly because they're Oregon's arch rivals and they beat USC a couple times. as for
everyone else, i want them to lose to outside schools as much as i want to beat them.
you may have noticed that the list of teams i dislike is quite a bit longer than the list of teams i like. you may have also
noticed that i dislike pretty much every team from New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. i have a friend who says he decided to, at
some point, try and let go of his dislike for certain teams and schools and focus on rooting for the teams he likes rather than
against the ones he doesn't. well not me. i find sports to be one of the few things in life where it can be healthy
to root for someone to fail, especially when you consider that so much of this is based on personal geography. after
all, the outcome really isn't that important in the scheme of things, despite the level of importance we tend to place on winning.
someone has to win and someone has to lose. as someone else i know so eloquently put it to me recently, i love sports hate.

to start the new year off i thought i'd discuss something that might actually be useful. i recently had a
discussion with a friend about shipping packages outside the United States. i told him that i had
figured out a way to do so without having to stand in line at the post office. so here it is, a lesson in how
to ship international packages using the automated postal center at your local post office. let me start by saying
that when i discovered this method, i felt pretty stupid
for not having thought of it sooner. since you can't calculate int'l postage through the automated machine i've had
to wait in long post office lines on several occassions when i needed to ship something outside of the country.
anyway, get your package boxed up and ready to ship. fill out the ever-changing
USPS customs form and head to the post office. this method requires that you weigh the package. ideally
you can do so before heading to the post office but you can use their scale is necessary. once you have
weighed your package go to USPS.com and choose calculate postage, then international. enter the country you're
shipping to and the weight of the package. i suggest rounding up to the nearest ounce so you can be sure you're
buying enough postage. this will give you the amount of postage you need to purchase. now go to the post office
machine and where you would normally choose ship a package instead select the option to buy stamps. it will ask you
what amount you want to buy and one of the options should say choose a different amount. click there and enter
the amount you got from the website. complete your purchase and affix the postage to your package
along with the customs form and drop it in the box.
|
how to outsmart this machine |
one time i had to go to the counter to drop off a package
because they had the box locked over the holiday and the woman was like, "how did you do this?
you can't do that!" she was none too happy with me when i said i had done it several times before. she said i wouldn't
get my customs form but you can remove the bottom portion yourself. it's clearly marked customer copy and you'll probably
end up throwing it away anyway. if you fill out the customs form correctly and purchase enough postage you shouldn't have
any problems but if for some reason you do they'll just return the package to your return address. i've yet to have that
happen to me but you might make your first attempt something that's not time sensitive just in case.
so there you go, now you can do all of your shipping, including int'l,
after the post office is closed and avoid waiting in line!

well, 2010 is all but over. although i have no special plans to celebrate, this has quietly been one of the best
years of my life. for starters, this was the first time i've ever spent the entire year somewhere other than California. not to
say that living in California is so bad but i count it as a blessing and an accomplishment to have arrived at a point in
my life where i can let go of my attachment to my home state. this was also the year that we bought our first house. one
of the reasons we decided to leave California was that we knew we would likely never be able to own a home there. next up, 2010 was
the first year of my adult life in which i didn't drink any soda, didn't eat any cheeseburgers, french fries, or other crappy
drive thru food and instead exercised at least 5 (usually 6) days a week. while i'm proud of what i've done, my longterm goal is to
turn these habits into a lifestyle. to repeat
this same pattern for long enough that to not do it, rather than to do it, would seem like the anomaly. to go on record, my goals
for 2011 are to run 500 miles again while also doing 200 miles of elliptical. we picked up a sweet elliptical machine in November,
which is great for those 25° nights. i'm also going to try for 10,000 pushups. i played basketball over 60 times last year, the most i've
played in a while, so i'm
hoping to play at least 50 times this year as well. this all assumes that God continues to bless me with health and safety in my
pursuits. i will continue to put my faith in Him and look forward to what He has in store for my life. godspeed.

perhaps the freshest shoes ever |
apparently this is turning into somewhat of a shoe blog, which was not my intention.
this Christmas my favorite gift (which i bought for myself) has to be my new pair of Nike Air Max 95 running shoes. i'm of the opinion that these are
one of, if not, the coolest pair of shoes ever created. i had two pairs in college, green and orange, but i rarely wore them
because i was so worried they'd get messed up. then one day i went to wear them and they had basically turned to salt, i guess from sitting in
my closet for so long. so this time i plan to wear them whenever i'm out on the town (which is never) and it's not raining. on a related and slightly
more interesting note, as 2010 draws to a close i have surpassed all my fitness goals for the year. i set out to run 500 miles and do 5000
pushups. despite the chilly conditions, i recently crossed the 600 mile mark and will end up with around 5100 pushups. the key to setting goals
is to make them challenging but achievable.

 Turkey Trot 8K |
on the left, a snapshot from the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 8K which i
completed in 43:53. yeah, i know that's still pretty slow but i took more than a minute off my last 8K time so i was happy about that.
it's starting to get cold so this will likely be my last event until the Cooper River 10K next April. as the year draws to a close i'm
closing in on my 2010 goals, which i'll probably discuss next time.
on the right, the Nike Lunar Eclipse in gray and lime. i'm looking to pick up a pair of race day shoes at some point in the next few
months to use in the bridge run. hopefully i can find a pair of these on eBay at a reasonable price. i believe they weigh something like 13
ounces. i've purchased a couple other pairs of Nike running shoes in the last couple months only to return them so we'll see if
these are any better. stay tuned.

this year halloween fell on a weekend. when i heard that there were several
halloween races in our area i thought it might be fun. i hadn't really planned on running a 5k because it seemed like too short of
a distance to warrant getting out of bed early on a Saturday morning. so when i heard about this twilight 5k it seemed like a good
excuse to give it a shot. as it turns out it was a lot of fun. the weather was perfect for running and the course was pretty cool.
being a halloween race some of the runners were dressed up and lots of people in the neighborhood were out on their porches watching
and cheering us on. i'm happy to report that i finished in a personal best 24:42. granted i had never run a 5k but i've timed some
3 mile workouts and i've never even come close to breaking 25 minutes. one of the great things about running is that it's really just
you against yourself, or the clock i guess. a 25 minute 5k is slow as molasses for lots of runners. for me it's an improvement
and a sign of progress. next up, Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 8k.

| a lot has gone on since last we spoke. summer turned to fall, football
season is underway, baseball is drawing to a close, and my rec league basketball team brought home the title with a
decisive 30 point victory in the championship game. a family member visited, another sustained an injury, and several turned
a year older. probably the most significant change that has taken place since June is that i am once again working full time,
which explains why i haven't had time to write anything. i suppose it doesn't really matter since no one reads this anyway
but i have a few events coming up that might be worth discussing so until then, godspeed.

fun with google maps. after making a map for the upcoming ugly duckling tour i thought it might be fun
to make another with all the places i've lived and visited. i've been way too many places in soCal
to name them all but i think i've marked just about every place i've been outside of California. having driven
from Seattle to LA to Houston and from LA to Carolina there are obviously plenty of towns along the way that
i've passed through so i've just marked the places i've actually stopped or stayed the night, not including
airport stops.

the kobra strikes again. after cruising to victory in game six, the Lakers overcame a double-digit second half
deficit on their way to an incredible game seven victory and a second consecutive NBA championship. despite an
off shooting night, Kobe hit clutch free throws and grabbed big rebounds down the stretch. Gasol also played
well but Ron Artest might be the biggest reason the Lakers can, once again, call themselves
champions. sorry Boston, maybe next year!

it appears that the search for the perfect basketball shoe has finally come to an end. well, i can't say for sure that this
is the perfect shoe until i wear them on the court but i'm hoping that these are the ones. after buying and then returning
several different pairs of shoes i decided that i would go with the Nike Kevin Durant II's, seen below. the only problem was that
when i finally got around to making this decision, they were pretty much sold out everywhere in my size. the black ones are still
readily available but i'm not too fond of black basketball shoes. anyway, after exhaustive searches on eBay and the web i finally
found a reputable site that had them and wasn't trying to inflate the price. so i picked up a pair and they
got here today. it's time to lace up and blast off for (very) low earth orbit.

there was a time when i wasn't a big believer in listening to music while working out. basketball has long been one of my favorite
forms of activity and, unless you're playing at the park, chances are you're not listening to music on the court. football is,
of course, not very conducive to music listening either being that you're wearing a helmet. although there was often music on in the
locker room and weight room in high school and college, it's been at least a couple years since i spent any quality time in either of those. anyway, these days
i've started back up jogging as my primary form of exercise and i've come to realize how motivating it can be to listen to music while
running. with that in mind, i've decided to compile a list of 10 of my favorite songs to listen to while running. some make obvious reference
to running but others are just songs that i put on my mp3 player because they seemed like good, upbeat tunes. so without further ado, here's the list.
click the song title to check out a YouTube video of each song...
1. Aerosmith - Train Kept A Rollin'
a funky rock song that, despite the likely undertones intended by the artist, i've chosen to interpret to mean
"just keep running." off their 1974 album "Get Your Wings", this song was released two years before Alicia Silverstone was born.
|
6. NWA - 100 Miles And Running
one of my all time favorite gangster rap songs, this NWA classic makes it easy to pretend like you're running from the police. their performance of this
song live on the Arsenio Hall Show is one of the best live rap performances ever.
|
|
|
2. Bill Landford - Run On For A Long Time
best known for cover versions done my Moby and Johnny Cash, this song has a old time sound that probably wasn't even
funky when it was first released. nevertheless, the lyrics and harmonies are great and i find it motivating. Moby's version (called " Run On")
is pretty cool too but, like most things, there's nothing quite like the original.
|
7. Pharcyde - Runnin'
another hip hop classic but for entirely different reasons. this song came out in 1995 as, what many consider to be, the golden age of rap was
making it's unceremonious exit from the airwaves. there is an obvious connection to running because of the title but the message here is that you can't keep (can't keep)
running away from life.
|
|
|
3. Gnarls Barkley - Going On
this is one of the best songs i've heard in the last 5 years, not only because of the incredible sound but the wise and
almost spiritual lyrics as well. in running, as in life, you must always continue going on and be prepared to go it alone.
|
8. The Creation - Making Time
this is a song that i first heard when it was featured in the movie Rushmore during the montage scene showing each of the
extracurricular activities that Max participates in. it was released in 1966 and still holds up all these years later.
|
|
|
4. Mass Influence - All Out
i can't remember when i first heard this song but i had in stuck in my head for what seemed like years. then one night, at an Ugly
Duckling show in Anaheim, the DJ played it and i got the name from him. a friend helped me
find the song and later we also found the sample that it uses, which is a great song by Bill Evans called " 55 Days at Peking."
|
9. Twisted Sister - Burn In Hell
yet another song that i first heard in a movie, it wasn't until more than 20 years later that i would actually learn to appreciate it.
this is the song that Twisted Sister is shooting a video for when they make their cameo in the 1985 classic "Pee Wee's Big Adventure." as it turns out, this is an awesome song with a surprisingly moral message.
|
|
|
5. Megadeth - Skin 'O My Teeth
this is just an awesome metal song that reminds me of the days when i first began to expand my musical horizons. it features one of my
favorite headbanging guitar solos and always gives me a boost of energy when it comes on. as the song says, with running there is
"no escaping pain."
|
10. Ugly Duckling - Einstein Do It
despite having no real lyrics, this song has series of build ups and peaks
that make it well suited for use as running music. demonstrating the incredible scratching and beat-digging abilities of DJ Einstein, this is probably
my favorite track off the group's 2009 release "Audacity."
|
Honorable Mention: Pink Floyd - Run Like Hell;
Black Moon - How Many Emcees;
Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express;
Sublime - Paddle Out;
Pearl Jam - Spin The Black Circle;
GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords;
Metallica - Master Of Puppets;
Beck - Devil's Haircut;
English Beat - March Of The Swivelheads (song at the end of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off")

with the NBA playoffs in full swing i thought it might be appropriate to discuss the increasing likelihood of a Boston
vs. Los Angeles finals. each team has a 2-0 lead in the conference finals and they appear destined to play for the title
once again. the Lakers and Celtics have met in the finals a total of eleven times, the first being in 1959. the Celtics have
won nine of those meetings, including the first eight. it wasn't until 1985 that the showtime Lakers finally ended the streak.
the Lakers have won several more titles over the years while the Celtics have basically languished in mediocrity. however, when
the two teams met again in the 2008 finals, Boston won the series 4-2. this included a 39 point thrashing in game six. the Lakers
will have the home court advantage, we'll see what happens.
|
 |
as a former Laker fan who jumped ship
when Kobe and company unceremoniously ran Shaq out of town, i might find it difficult to pull for Lakers under different
circumstances. however, my dislike for the Celtics has never diminished. i know hate is a strong word, but it's not nearly
strong enough to describe the way i feel about Boston. their current cast of characters is every bit as loathsome as the
Celtics of the 80's. Paul Pierce, Rasheed Wallace, KG, Rondo, Big Baby Davis, Kendrick Perkins. that has to be the ugliest bunch of guys
ever to play on the same team. after the conference semi-finals it sure looked like Orlando might be the team to beat, but not anymore.
out west, the Suns are easily my favorite team as Nash and Amare are two of my top three favorite players (D Wade being the other)
but it just doesn't appear that they can stop the Lakers. it will be tough to root for the team that eliminates the Suns but, as i said,
it's as much about preventing the Celtics from winning as seeing the Lakers win.

 False Truth |
on a final note, the talk about where Lebron would end up had already begun before the Cavs plane landed back in Cleveland following
their game six loss to Boston. i'd like to go on record saying that although i would like to see him win a title in Cleveland, if he
leaves town he will become a villain in my book. considering he's from Ohio and none of the teams he's rumored to be considering have
nearly as much of a chance of winning next year as does the team he's already on, i can't imagine why he'd leave. when you're that good
you shouldn't have to go anywhere to win championships. good players will come to you and the franchise has already demonstrated it's
willingness to do whatever it takes to win. they brought in enough talent to lead the league in wins during the regular season. i think they
should find a new coach, but aside from that the rest is up to Lebron. i'd like to see him stay and win, but if he leaves i won't be
disappointed if he never wins one... that is unless he goes to the Clippers.

a couple weeks ago i was fortunate enough to visit
Augusta, Georgia to watch the final round of the 2010 Masters. while i have never been a big golf fan, i couldn't
pass up the opportunity to see the event that is clearly the pinnacle of the sport live and in person and, i have to admit, it was
actually very cool. the tradition, the history, the pimento cheese sandwiches, it was quite a spectacle. however, since cameras
and phones are not allowed at Augusta i have no real proof that i was there aside from a few plastic cups and a shirt. so
when the opportunity to attend the Wednesday practice round at the Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina
presented itself, i couldn't pass it up. the lineup included most of the top players, each paired with 2 amateurs.
|
the most interesting pairing had to be that of Fred Couples,
who was playing alongside new Bobcats owner Michael Jordan and Quail Hollow club president John Harris. Tiger's group was just finishing not long
after we got there. we were also able to see Phil Mickelson, fresh off his win at Augusta, as well as 2009 Masters champion Angel Cabrera and 2 time
British Open champion Padraig Harrington, who also happens to be my mom's favorite golfer. since cameras are allowed at the practice round,
this time i have the pictures to prove it. after attending two golf tournaments in the same month i think i've had my fill for the
time being, nevertheless it was a good day.

 Crossing the finish |
about a week ago, i participated in the Cooper River Bridge Run.
it's a 10K race held annually in Charleston, South Carolina. with about 40,000 people taking part, it's one of the most popular 10k's
in the country. the course begins on the Mt. Pleasant side of the Cooper River and makes it's way across the 2.5 mile long Ravenel Bridge
into Charleston. you can't really tell from the picture but the first mile or so of the bridge is a fairly steep 4% incline. anyway,
this was my first 10k and it was a great experience. as you can see from the picture on the right, the
bridge is absolutely packed. there were so many people that it was basically impossible to run at a consistent
pace without having to dodge people the whole time. next year i need to try and start closer to the front. that's certainly
not to say that i'm fast or anything, but there were a lot of people walking. i would, however, like to point out that the
chubby guy in the gray sweatshirt just in front of me in the picture on the left started way before i did. so at least i beat him.

hello and welcome to spacelog87. the stated objective of this mission is to explore the outer reaches of
the inner brain. while en route to deep space nine, we will briefly slow from warp speed to allow proper
research to be conducted on the debris floating throughout deep space eight and seven. alright, i think
you get the idea. i'm not particularly fond of the term "blog" so i'm not going to use
it, but that's essentially what this is. i also don't like using capital letters in informal writing so
i'm not going to do that either. i doubt this will be read by many but that's not all that important
since my primary objective in writing it is to amuse myself. i sometimes find myself thinking "that would be funny to write about" or "i should put that on
Facebook." however, it seems that people tend to care a lot about the stuff they post or write and not so much
about what other people write. that's usually the case with me. i write something that i think is clever or post
something i find interesting and no one really cares. i can't say i blame them. besides, i'm starting to feel like
Facebook has kind of run it's course. so rather than post stuff there and have it be ignored, i'm going to post stuff
here and have it likely suffer the same fate. alright, now that we're underway i must discontinue neurotransmission
and allow tonic and phasic relaxation to occur. await further instructions, godspeed.
